Ciao a tutti!
If you weren’t already aware, Andrea Noel Designs has just touched down in Rome! While spending lots of time visiting family & friends, EATING, drinking, and roaming the streets looking at the beautiful historical sights, we’ve noticed something interesting; great design doesn’t always have to be larger than life.
The Italians do a marvelous job of making the most out of a small space. Here are our top 5 tips on expanding the look of your tiny rooms.
Tip #1: Mirror Magic
Wait, but seriously…they really are magical. A mirrored wall creates an optical illusion for the eye. When looking at this room, you almost think it goes on way farther than it actually does, but think again! Thats the magic of the mirror.
Tip #2: Darkness=Depth
Just like mirrors, dark hues create the illusion of depth to a space.
Tip #3: Big is Better
I know… I know, this one doesn’t make as much sense right off the bat but hear us out… Placing one big piece on a wall does wonders to a space. Whether it be a painting that makes a statement, a mural or an interesting mirror (see…mirrors are pretty much everything), the vastness of the piece will, in turn, make the space seem bigger than it actually is.
Tip #4: With Just a Pinch of Print
Print is such a creative way to conquer tiny rooms. The eye will immediately follow the print at hand, taking the attention away from the size of the room. It’s pure genius we tell you!
Tip #5: Divide and Conquer
Lesson #1 back in the first semester of Design School was how to plan out any space so that it functions to its’ fullest potential. Same is true, or if not more so, for small spaces. Assigning designated sections in a small space is particularly “importante”. This, my friend, is what us designers like to call the art of space planning.
So while we’re over here on the other side of the world maneuvering through the small spaces of Italia, try your hand at expanding a few of your smaller spaces with these tips!
Until next Thursday…
